For dental professionals in the Detroit area, dental or dental hygiene students at Detroit Mercy Dental and alumnae of Detroit Mercy Dental, October offers a unique opportunity. In one evening, it’s possible to:- Meet the 2018 Lucy Hobbs Project Humanitarian Award recipient,
- Find new ways to have it all, and
- Give back to the community.
The Lucy Hobbs Project YOU Event, on Thursday, October 11, hosted by Detroit Mercy Dental, offers – at no charge – a mentorship forum to discuss changes in dentistry and women as entrepreneurs.
Inspiration at every turn
Sharon K. Parsons, D.D.S., who recently received The Lucy Hobbs Project Humanitarian Award, will offer the event’s keynote speech.
In October 2019, Dr. Parsons will be inducted as President of the Ohio Dental Association; Dr. Parsons is only the third woman elected to the position.

Feel good, give back.
The event will benefit Sanctum House, a safe home for survivors of human trafficking to heal and rebuild their lives. Their program, which offers shelter, is a 24-month program of personal development and education for women 18 years of age or older. Through their outreach, Sanctum House continually brings awareness to the community and anticipates reaching younger trafficking victims to help them to see that there is hope for a successful future in life.

The Lucy Hobbs Project is named to honor Dr. Lucy Hobbs Taylor, the first American woman to earn a degree in dentistry. Born in 1833, Lucy was refused admission to dental school because of her gender. But she persevered, learning dentistry as an apprentice, graduating from the Ohio College of Dental Surgery, and becoming the first licensed female dentist in 1866. Her leadership, courage and success paved the way for other women. It is her legacy that fuels the three pillars of the project: networking, innovation and giving back.
